Product Description People today are sleep-deprived, and nowhere are the negative effects felt more acutely than in families. Most parents realize that their families aren’t getting enough sleep, though they likely don’t understand how serious the problem is and need help finding a solution. In this book, renowned psychologist and best-selling author Arch Hart explores why sleep is so important, what happens when family members are chronically sleep deprived, and how families can start developing healthy sleep habits.

Lack of Sleep Is Costing You More Than You Think April 7, 2010 Sarah Raymond Cunningham (Southeast Michigan) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sleep, It Does A Family Good, builds a strong case for getting more Z's. Author Archibald Hart maintains uses a well woven series of facts, anecdotes, checklists and surveys to convince readers that our lack of sleep is costing us more than we realize.
In America, getting by on just a little sleep can be seen as admirable. It is "overrated" and a tendency of the "lazy," some might say. But sleep deprivation is probably taking away much more than the few extra hours of awake time is adding. For example, failure to get an adequate amount of sleep is proven to create strains on marriage and parenting, child learning, and health (it is linked to immune problems, diabetes, obesity, anxiety and depression).
For the spiritually motivated, sleep is essential to keeping one's inner life in order. Unsurprisingly, good sleep can spring out of a heart at peace.
You'll steer yourself away from late night TV, internet surfing and computer games and you may cut back on caffeine late in the day after reading Dr. Hart's tips for building better family sleep habits. This and other advice will help the reader learn how to take simple steps toward making sleep--and health--a priority.
Review for Sleep, It Does a Family Good by Dr Archibald D Hart April 8, 2010 DreamworldBooks 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dr. Archibald D Hart's Sleep, It Does a Family Good is by far the best guide I've read to date about sleeping and its effects on health. In today's fast-paced society, sleep has been casually cast aside as unimportant, when in fact, neglecting sleep is very dangerous to people's health and can also negatively impact relationships, families, and marriages.
With Sleep, It Does a Family Good, Dr. Hart has created a well-crafted and simple-to-read informative health guide on sleeping and how it is crucial and essential in leading a full, rich, and satisfying life. Many people today believe that napping and sleeping are self-indulging signs of mental weakness; whereas Dr. Hart assures us that these misconceptions will shave years off our lives by causing increased stress and generating lower levels of happiness. Dr. Hart also teaches readers strategies on how to overcome worries and anxiety while trying to fall asleep at night, which is ultimately helpful since the majority of people are impacted by this obstacle. From mastering sleep patterns, overcoming spousal sleep barriers, and to educating on sleeping pills, Dr. Hart leaves no stone unturned on the subject of sleep.
Sleep, It Does a Family Good is wonderful and informative to read because sleep really is more important than people give it credit for. Society's neglectful views toward sleeping and the popular quote along the lines of "I'll sleep plenty when I die" is too dangerous, and just adds to more common existing health risks such as obesity and poor eating habits. Another benefit of Dr. Hart's book is that he explains how poor sleeping habits will affect family growth and marriages. I recommend this book to EVERYONE, especially those who are looking to enhance their health and well-being. Excellent book, and I intend on keeping Sleep, It Does a Family Good in my personal collection to share with friends and family.

I Feel Better Already!! April 9, 2010 Angel Muly (Tulsa, OK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Archibald Hart's book, Sleep, It Does a Family Good, offers help and hope for those who realize they need more sleep and those who don't. He explains the role of sleep in all aspects of our lives. He offers suggestions on ways for every family member to get the sleep they need. He even gives simple tests to determine if you are getting enough. He discusses, not only, the sleep patterns of a busy mom wearing too many hats, but he also talks of sleepiness in our children and teens and what is going on in our lives to contribute to it. He relates marital problems, relationship problems, and even spiritual problems to sleep deprivation.
This book is packed full of great advice and exercises to rid us of our tiredness. How wonderful it will be to wake up every morning refreshed, well rested, and ready to conquer the day. He ends with exercises to help us end the day relaxed and ready to fall asleep quickly. I love his ideas - reflecting on good things that have happened in our day, letting go of aggravating things, and dwelling on God. What better way to end our day.
I loved this book, it is an easy read. I would recommend it to everyone, business man/woman, stay-at-home mom, single person, families, Christians, non-Christians, teens, and everyone in between. I believe it is never too late to start taking better care of ourselves, and with the advice in this book, we can conquer our sleep health.
I received this complimentary book from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion, thank you.
Sleep and Family Wellness May 2, 2010 Mike Robinson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Many Americans are not getting enough sleep, and the lack thereof produces difficulties and challenges within the family. As a pastor and father of four (and a nutritionist) I am blessed that over the years, I have focused on my kids (and the whole family) consistently getting enough night time slumber. If your family is a bit lax in this important wellness element, purchase this volume. In "Sleep: It Does a Family Good," distinguished psychologist and author Arch Hart presents an outstanding case for the reason why sleep is so vital, and what occurs when people are persistently sleep deprived. He then supplies numerous practical steps to help families develop healthy sleep routines.
Getting enough sleep is essential, from babyhood to adolescence. And kids less than 4 require daytime naps. Young people (an adults too) who do not get enough sleep can be very persnickety, ill-tempered, aggressive and difficult.
Children of ages listed below should get AT LEAST:
* Less than 1 year: 14-15 hours
* 1-1.5 years: 14-15 hours
* 1.5-3 years: 12-14 hours
* 3-5 years: 11-13 hours
* 6-12 years: 10-11 hours
* Teens/young adults: 9.0-1.5 hours
* Adults: 8-9 hours
Making real changes in sleep patters requires more than just Chamomile Tea, Valerian Herbs, and Melatonin pills, herein the author supplies workable solutions. Focus on the Family recommends this volume and as a Certified Nutritionist I heartily endorse it.

Sleep Book Review April 9, 2010 M. Jinnette Like most families in the U.S., we are busy with ball games, practices, school, homework, playdates, work, etc. Our sleep habits have gotten worse over time as a result. Even though my husband and I try to keep the kids on somewhat of a bedtime schedule, neither one of us go to bed before 12 a.m. We get up as late as possible, dreading the morning and wanting to sleep a few more hours.
At first, before Sleep, It Does A Family Good by Dr. Archibald Hart arrived, I was dreading reading it. I thought it would be boring, but I was wrong. Dr. Hart keeps the book quite interesting. He does mention different sleep studies and includes charts, graphs, and questionnaires. But, he also gives you personal stories from his life and his family members and composites of patients he has worked with in his practice. The stories show you that you are not alone in your struggles with sleep. Dr. Hart shows you what worked for them and gives suggestions you can try in your own situations. Reading this book has given me insight that my six hours or less sleep at night is not good for my health (or my family when I wake up in a bad mood) and how to overcome my problem. I HIGHLY recommend this book for everyone!!
